Exceptional Regence style Fire Screen  France  - Circa 1820

This absolutely gorgeous "ecran de cheminee " is in beech wood, very light, mobile and is designated to be in front of the fire place to protect from too much heat and eventually too attenuate too much light coming from the fire.
This screen has sophisticated carving one can find in early 18th Century (Regence time), with at the center top a large shell having Acanthus leaves on the sides and scrolled feet topped by very large Acanthus leaves on the frame. The sliding screen is lined in front with a superb polychromatic silk fabric made by Pierre Frey after a 18th Century cartoon.
The counterweight (probably in lead) is wrapped into the same fabric as the screen and decorated with a passementerie in the same tones as the fabric but darker. In its highest position the screen is hold by a metal strip system which will release the screen by a simple push if/when needed.

Dim.: 33"W x 18"D x 47"H.  At the max the opening is 26" W by 25.5"H.

French 18th Century carved gilt wood Bust of a Women

wearing turban and a solid plume. A wave of orientalism broke in France in the 18th Century, with no particular style, but inspired by the totally imagined exotism of Ottoman, Persian and Far- Eastern Empires. It was happening in literature (Montesquieu, Voltaire), in Arts (paintings notably) and in fashion particularly hairstyle and coiffe, (always higher...).
This French women great wood carving shows her plaited hair attached to the turban in the back and a pearled hairpin in the front.
