Marble and Stone

Pair of black and green Onyx Marbles Obelisks

France has had a sort of fascination with obelisks in the 19th Century. It all started with Napoleon Bonaparte Expedition to Egypt (1798-1801) with 167 scientists representing all disciplines (math to ethnology), their discovery of the Rosetta stone and the deciphering of it (1822-1824) by Champollion, an incredibly gifted young French man (who mastered 25 languages at age 20) and of course the arrival and erection of 1 of Luxor temple obelisk on Place de la Concorde in Paris in 1836! It had been given to France by the Viceroy of Egypt in 1826.
Each of this 2 obelisks is made of a green onyx marble shaft standing on a black marble plinth and then upon a black marble base over a gilded bronze trim. The front side of this 4 sides structure is carved with hieroglyphs that were gold and silver gilded afterwards. The pair is symetrical i.e. there is a right and a left obelisk with all the same hieroglyphs but facing each other. Both obelisks are stamped BLANPAIN on the bronze base.

Carved Italian Marble Bust of a Woman

Italy
Great rendering by the artist of the beauty and the facial expression of this women apparently lost in thoughts. Also nice detailed sculpture of the pearl-strewn hair, the 3 rows little necklace chain with a pendant marked M , the carving of the lingerie covering the low neckline ,the flowers on the dress and -very importantly-the large ribbons braid on the shoulders which set the all sculpture off.
Signed (back) A. Faguioli.

Possibly by or after Attilio Fagioli Italian 1877-1966.
