Auguste Moreau "Deux Enfants" Biscuit
France - Circa 1860
A. Moreau (French 1834-1917) charming scene of
this two young children standing next to each other is a recurrent theme
for this famous sculptor. The little boy is murmuring -probably-.with a
subdued voice gentle compliments to a little girl who is listening with
open but downcast eyes. The boy's face shows he is trying to be convincing
but she does not -yet- smile even if her face is showing interest and
pleasure to hear what she is earring.
She is wearing a shift ,hold a bouquet of probably wild flowers in her
right arm and has a flowery ribbon around her head when the boy is almost
naked. The sculptor clearly wanted us to focus essentially on the
children's faces expressions and also on the 2 arms of the boy.

Large French Olive Jar
France - Circa 1820
This piece is called "melard" in French and was made in Auvergne (center
of France)
Its purpose was to store olive oil (coming from Provence). In Auvergne,
the pottery tradition goes back to Gallo Roman time (Ca 100A.D.). In the
19th C, the tradition continues to make simple and utilitarian domestic
objects with old techniques .This piece is typical with a glazed
earthenware which provides a marvelous green with reddish accents color.
Its shape is little ovoid with a flat bottom ."Decoration" is a network of
horizontal and vertical narrow bands which function is to reinforce the
jar both during the ceramming heat cycle and during its usage. It has 3
handles for handy grip. We evaluate its countenance to be around 30
gallons and its weight (empty) 50 pounds. Interesting and quite unique
,this "melard" did not have his outside surface cleaned after last usage
and shows lot of solid "drops" of oil on it. That's because olive oil is
siccative (quick drying) and therefore become solid in air due to the
oxydation of the "double bond". This "melard" can be inside or outside the
house.

Large Quimper Charger from
France (Brittany) - 2nd part of 19th Century
This large Quimper charger has an undulating rim and 3 sorts of
decors inside. On the aisle 12 yellow and white birds are busy
eating fruits. Underneath, 2 friezes provides an enhancement of
the center geometric decor of 2 circles surrounded by 6 half
circles. Interestingly, the center decor conveys 5 colors, exactly
the same as the "birds decor". In between, 2 more colors are being
used: maroon and beige.
Painting Quimper is a true Folk Art with its invaluated "decor
a la touche" ( the brush stroke). Pattern are painted on top of
raw glaze and by the same person from start to finish. It takes
years to learn the quick stroke of the wrist ,called "coup de
pinceau" when the brush, in a single strike determine at the same
time the shape and the color, starting from a drop of colored
liquid being "etire" (stretched). This technique was used before (eg
Nevers in 18th Cent.) but in Quimper only were they using brushes
made of hairs from beef's or cow's ears!!
Collectors around the world cherish this creative and distinct
naive designs.
PS: a second thermal cycle (6hours at 940 Celsius) glazes the
decor on top of the biscuit glazing.
This charger is marked HB (for Hubaudiere-Bousquet) and Quimper
in the back.
Diameter : 17 1/2 "Excellent condition, no chip, no hairline and no repair done.1
